Professor Julia King (Baroness Brown of Cambridge) visited Australia in October as our 2019 Distinguished Lecturer, sponsored by the University of Melbourne, Peter Cook Centre for CCS Research and the Minerals Council of Australia.

In June 2019 the University of Melbourne hosted a one-day Roundtable on Negative Emission Technologies (NETs) at the Woodward Conference Centre in Melbourne.

The Peter Cook Centre and Sotacarbo (Italy) have signed an agreement boosting opportunities to collaborate on CCS research projects. This strategic partnership leverages complementary expertise and capabilities and offers a stronger international engagement for both organisations.

Dr. Colin Scholes from the Peter Cook Centre comments on BHP’s investment in a company developing and deploying direct air capture technology: “It would be awesome if direct air capture together with underground storage can lead to clear reductions in CO2 levels in the atmosphere”, but he also wonders about the cost of this technology.

The cost of capturing CO2 drops by 67% for the next carbon capture plant according to a recent study by the International CCS Knowledge Centre. “We always expected some cost savings for the next generation capture plant, but saving two-thirds of the cost certainly exceeded our expectations,” says Mr. Mike Monea, President and CEO of the Knowledge Centre and inaugural Distinguished Guest Lecturer of the Peter Cook Centre.

GHGT-14: What a success!The GHGT-14 conference stimulated enthusiasm for CCS and exceeded our expectations. It was a memorable week with over 1000 national and international delegates from industry, governments and academia, plenary and technical presentations, an exhibition floor and plenty of networking events. The Trilemma Scale creates a single metric that enables systematic, transparent and quantitative comparison of the contribution of each power generation technology to the ‘Energy Trilemma’. The lower the score, the more effective the technology is in addressing the combination of cost, reliability and emissions reduction. The findings highlight a mismatch between Trilemma Scores and current policies.

On Wednesday 28 September CO2CRC and the University of Melbourne officially opened new carbon capture and storage laboratories at the University of Melbourne.

The very first Australian CCS Research Conference was a resounding success. The event brought together leading Australian and international researchers after a long hiatus to discuss the latest developments in CCS research.

Congratulations to PhD Student Guoping Hu, who was awarded Earth Sciences Victorian Young Scientist of the Year for his research in “Novel promoters for carbon dioxide absorption in potassium carbonate solutions. This year’s competition was one of the toughest our judges have had to assess in recent memory, with eight outstanding early-career scientists presenting their work with consistent excellence.

Our week of energy tipping points continues with news from the International Energy Agency that a surge of investment in wind and solar generation through 2015 has created a world with more installed renewable energy generation than coal-fuelled power.
